Singer/songwriter Jann Arden packs her bags and heads for the Big Apple in search of her one elusive goal - American recognition - in the all-new, one-hour "rock-umentary" Jann Takes Manhattan. This unique special follows an intrepid Arden as she travels to New York for two weeks to perform in an Off-Broadway theatre with the ambition of finding a U.S. agent and attracting media attention. "I am tossing the proverbial pebble in the pond of one of the biggest music markets in the world," says Arden. "The idea being, 'if you make it there, you'll make it anywhere.'" In Jann Takes Manhattan, the camera captures the magic of Arden's musical performances in an intimate setting upstairs at the legendary Studio 54. In between performance footage, viewers see Arden and her band take in the Big Apple, visiting CBS Sunday Morning, 95.5 WPLJ FM, and busking in Central Park. No matter where they go the people of New York are charmed by the whole package. And although Entertainment Weekly asserts that Arden "deserves to follow fellow countrywoman Sarah McLachlan down the road to platinum (in the U.S.)," the question remains: will Jann's New York jaunt be enough to finally propel her star across the border? Jann Arden can bring an audience to the verge of tears only to have them rolling in the aisles moments later. It's that juxtaposition - the poet's gift for poignant love songs paired with a comedian's timing and self-depreciating wit - that has earned Arden a legion of loyal fans in Canada and around the world. One of Canada's most accomplished performers, Arden has released seven hit CDs and received several music awards, including eight Junos. She continues to develop her love for acting and comedy with performances in The Vagina Monologues and as host of Eve's Tavern at the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal.
